A malicious worm that exploits last month's RPC DCOM vulnerability struck the Internet Monday afternoon, targeting unpatched Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines.

The symptoms that you are seeing might be due to the RPC service being turned off. Check the service, change it to "auto" and set it so that it will do nothing on error....
