A recent XP security hole begs the question, do we really want Microsoft to release individual fixes for every bug?

This is not fact, it's opinion.
>It isn't a perfect system, but the service pack paradigm

I work with a number of OSes, most notably nix (AIX, and Linux Redhat) in addition to W2K.
The smaller patch systems for nix provides for a number of advantages:
1. Easier to fix a specific problem
2. Easier to perform testing and evaluation
3. Quicker to download.
4. Less likely to create a bigger problem.
Naturally these myriad patches can and are bundled similar to the MS Service Pack, so the user has the choice.
The disadvantages of the Tolkien-esque MS approach are blinding, and serve only to remind us that MS continues to treat security as a PR issue. "quick bury the problem, they won't notice".
That said, MS do understand the concept of small patches as anyone who's spend many a happy hour on their tech site will testify.
As for home users - use an Apple folks, it's simple to use, doesn't go wrong, has nix levels of security. It delivers, and doesn't take. Oh and did I mention it's gorgeous? ;-)
