One Patch to Rule Them All
Tim Mullen, 2002-09-30

A recent XP security hole begs the question, do we really want Microsoft to release individual fixes for every bug?

I get so sick and tired of all these people whining about MS this and MS that, when I have had nothing but success with them. We run Multiple HP servers(20+) with multiple processors, 3 huge Terminal Servers, 2 SQL Servers, we are in the process of rolling out XP to all of our 26 branches in 2 states(400+ PC's) and by using Terminal servers and the remote desktop feature of XP, 2 network admins can service all 400+ PC's at 26+ locations spread across 100+ mile radius. All this because of Microsoft's Terminal Services and remote desktop. We were able to hold off updating our hardware on the end users because all programs run on the T.S.
The biggest problem with IT staff is they don't fully test software before just "applying" the SP and then hoping it works. A good example is SP3 for Win 2K. There is an obvious printing glitch with Terminal Servers and SP3. We caught it in out testing right away. Go to the MS newsgroups and see all the complaining about how their printing is no longer working. To expect every patch to be flawless and apply without testing is foolish. 'Nuff said.
To still be having trouble with Klez is embarassing.
We looked into Novell(we Had Novell) and it was CHEAPER to switch to MS!! we got quotes from both companies and MS won hands down.
