The arguments about multiple candidates with equal experience, one has a degree, one has certs, one has nothing, and one has a note from his mother do not apply, because you already stated they have equal experience (wisdom).
Wisdom trumps intelligence, period.
Continued education, once working in the field, is generally recognized as a Good Thing, but whether that comes from college, internet courses, certifications, conferences, or self study is of little consequence.
The more qualified candidate is the one who has proven they can DO the job, not the one with a piece of paper that says they READ about the job.
Given multiple candidates with equal experience, the one who continued to improve their breadth or depth of relevant knowledge wins, whether that is through, as I said, some formal process, or a more informal one.
Again, Wisdom trumps Intelligence.
