Vendors make very little money out of the exams, it is the training they make the money out of. If I were to criticise the certificaiton industry I would look out for inadequate and expensive training, not the fact tha certification exists.
It's easy to declaim that experience is a better way to get a job than qualifications, but if you have no experience how do you get the job required to get the experience?. At a minimum, certifications indicate that a person has the get up and go to apply themselves. Doesn't mean they are good, doesn't mean they should be given a job over an uncertified person. It means they at some point they knew the basics.
Industry Certificiations are not going to go away, analyse how they are used, not that that they exist at all.
