I went back for a masters in soil and botany 11 years ago, so I can tell you from experience the change and effort will be worth it. The fact that I've read your column shows I haven't entirely slipped the surly bonds of life at the keyboard, but I did get a family and a much wider appreciation for the world.

I'll leave you with two pieces of unasked-for advice: Student loans will tie you to high-paying jobs, like security; the old chinese poets, translated by David Hinton, Red Pine, or Mark O'Connor, are wonderful reads.

Good luck!
