Great piece. VCL was one of the more interesting things to happen in the pre-internet days, nice to know NuKE and the 514 scene still have some infamy.

One of the interesting consequences of commercial viruses like this, imho, is how easily they could be re-purposed for even more malevolent uses than the RIAA intends. It's a PR nightmare that is almost guaranteed to happen: clever script-kid reverses the code and extends it to not be specific to copyright material, etc.
