Unemployed virus writers take heart: the recording industry is hiring cyber miscreants to attack its own customers. And we thought you'd never amount to anything.

Premise: I don't really download any music at all because my main interest is classical/baroque music and I have all of that on CD.

But...

I have an Apple Mac G4, run OSX, have a 10 mbit/sec NATed connection and live in Italy. I'm curious what the RIAA thinks it can do against me, or people like me. Windows Scripting exploit? Sorry, no luck. Buffer overflow that disseminates x86 opcodes all over my stack? Try again. Exploit a Service? Won't work. DoS me? Yeah right, try harder. Sue me? Kiss my foreign posterior.

As long as determined stallwarts survive, they can continue offering up their wares on secure platforms of choice. OpenBSD Fastrack servers may not be far off. As long as the serving platforms are secure, then file downloaders will be able to continue their downloads unabated.

Honestly, I think the RIAA is really overstepping the mark here. I know for a fact that if a single DoS packet comes in headed for TCP/1214 on any of the networks I administer my company's lawyers will be on fast-dial. I agree that up to a certain point this is only an attempt to foster FUD, and they have a right to defend their intellectual rights. US law may even give them the right to defend those rights by ruining other people's work and harming other people's intellectual rights... their business, I'm not going comment on the wisdom of American legislators.

But if and when they try to pull that off over here in Europe, they'll be in Big Trouble.
