Can Microsoft End Spam?
Tim Mullen, 2003-06-30

Unwanted e-mail saps security budgets and wastes everyone's time. It's nice to see Bill Gates take some responsibility for stopping it.

I consider spam almost as invasive as a telemarketer, but not quite. I personally have never really had a problem with it, but if I were getting 50 a day, which some of my fellow associates do, then I would have an issue with it.

I really don?t think the snail mail analogy is a good one because it does cost a considerable amount of money to send flyers through the mail. Spam also doesn?t call you right in the middle of dinner either, but I believe we could eventually see a do-not-spam list be created as the government catches up with technology.

In my opinion it falls somewhere in between, snail mail and a telemarketer and spams fate will ultimately be decided by how much people are willing to take. Once, they?ve had enough and complained to their representatives an agency like the FCC will step in and police it. Once that happens they will need to fund all the equipment, personnel, and maintenance to do the job. Who is going to pay for that? I believe spammers will have to get a license and maybe a tax on each email sent will somehow be applied. But who knows?
