- While eventually (and eventually in this case will probably be a fairly long time horizon - at least 10-20 years) jobs will come back to the United States due to equalization of labor costs, what will be done in the meantime? This totally ignores the sheer numbers of people we're talking about here; India and China aren't exactly short on people (and many well qualified people, to be sure). The other part of this equation is that these companies will end up moving operations again once the price drops a bit. I may be old fashioned, but I believe in the concept of loyalty (and that should go both ways, mind you).
- If no one can afford to purchase your products, regardless of how cheaply you can produce them, where will your current and future profits come from?
- While this article focuses fairly narrowly on the topic of positions in security, what of the security inherent in production (especially when it comes to software)? If Microsoft outsources their programming, do they not in effect assume a security liability due to the fact that since their software is used by businesses all over the United States, it is an attractive target for foreign intelligence operatives or others who wish to cause Microsoft and, by extension, the United States, harm? I think this issue was touched on earlier, but I think it's a fair question to ask considering the circumstances in which the United States finds itself today.
Sorry for the long winded post, but this topic has been on my mind quite a bit lately.
