We spend money, increase administration, and take away functionality. Is it any wonder that security people are so misunderstood?

Well now we know.
The useless, lazy MS operators sit back till Thursday morning when they punch in and then learn about the latest holes and patches. Everyone else is on the ball the moment the vulnerability and patch is announced. Not the next day after you've had a good night's sleep.
This explains it all. Thanks!
He said it. Not me:
