The Subpoenas are Coming!
Mark Rasch, 2003-09-29

Citing a provision of the Patriot Act, the FBI is sending letters to journalists telling them to secretly prepare to turn over their notes, e-mails and sources to the bureau. Should we throw out the First Amendment to nail a hacker?

I think most of our freedom is illusionary. People say that we have more freedoms than most countries. Well technically they are correct. But i would also agree that our freedoms are also slimming faster than any other country. Atleast others are used to the way we live. We have to adjust to less freedom every election. Even the freedoms that arent illusionary (first amendment) have many strings attached and you have to tip toe around how you use them. All this, in the future, in the currect path we are taking, means for us less privacy, less equality, but it certainly will not APPEAR to be less freedom. The Bush Administration seems to have become exceedingly good at that(for example the excuse of them being required to take away certain rights in order to ensure our safety. Most if not all cases of this were total bull.)

Once the FBI can succeed at this just ONCE, once is all it takes, they will set a precedent which will mean less freedom for reporters from that point on. That is why it is a big deal.
