The Subpoenas are Coming!
Mark Rasch, 2003-09-29

Citing a provision of the Patriot Act, the FBI is sending letters to journalists telling them to secretly prepare to turn over their notes, e-mails and sources to the bureau. Should we throw out the First Amendment to nail a hacker?

You say:

"The country is at WAR,..."

Who are we at war with? Surely not our fellow Americans?

My point is that we should be civil to our fellow citizens. We should all have the wellfare of the country and each other at heart. We should not promote hatred of each other by demonizing our political opposition.

Sometimes it seems to me that the extreme left and the extreme right are trying to foment civil war. Both sides have committed terrorist acts. But no one profits from civil war other than the weapons dealers and grave-diggers.

Bill Clinton was not the devil incarnate and neither is George W. Those who would excite the public passion one should look at the butchery and bloodshed that typically results when hatred and anger and similar passions are unleashed.

I hear people say that "The most important thing in life is to be passionate about something". I think that is dangerous advice. Reason is preferable to unbridled emotion. It is only through civil discussion and reasoned decision making that our society can survive.
