Kudos on the article.
Yes, we'll never make money at it (helping Joe User), but that's why we keep our day jobs, and thus have the resources there to keep learning.
EDUCATION is key, no matter how you slice it.
In my experience, Joe User is simply unaware.
Community awareness sessions at your local library cost nothing, and hopefully, they'll tell two friends, and so on......
We're the experts, we're (usually) respected for our experience, let's do this at the grass-roots level.
Yes, RH Linux is insecure out of the box, but WE know how to button it down. MacOS X is a good consumer alternative, once IPFW is tuned.
Believe it or not, M$ does deserve some credit. Has anyone here ever tried to turn a SuperTanker in a quarter mile?
NOTE: Even DHS and the Ad Council have announced plans for a major awareness campaign next year. Let's use that as our trampoline.
Also, let's stop quibbling and give each other some credit - we are in a field where cooperation is king. Face it - Some of those in the field have a bit of an elistist complex, and by denegrating a specific platform, we only make ourselves look foolish.
We are paid to be objective, and flexible, and PROFESSIONAL.
Yes, this has been a bit random, but I'm proud to at least attempt to be part of the solution. Altruism is still an admirable quality, in my mind - I continually admire the open-source community for their selfless contributions. Let's get out there and help educate Joe User, Grandma, whomever. It's little different from helping a friend move, or paint their house, but the benefits stretch farther.
