I've found that IT professionals (I'm talking non-security pros) are as bad as the general public and these people should know better.

What it basically boils down to is that people either do not believe it will happen to them or they justify it by saying that if someone wants to get your information they will anyway. (If someone wants to steal my car they will, but I don't leave it unlocked with the keys in the ignition to help them!) Or they just don't want to take the time to do what is necessary.

I honestly sometimes feel completely overwhelmed. If I can't get cooperation from my peers how likely am I to get it from the rest of the public?

And don't even get me started on wireless... now I have to contend with Centrino commercials making it seem as though Wireless is harmless and desirable. Firewalls are not going to help all the people with wireless.
