I think the internet slows down just as much or more every time microsoft deploys one of its massive security patches through windows update as it does when the latest worm, trojan or virus sweeps the globe. So there is a multiplier to the slowdown effect that follows later...a second wave that is tidal wave compared to the rough seas that the initial nastiness caused.

Then there is the additional load on the net caused by spyware shipped already installed in many home-use computers.

Joe Average User is definitely in trouble - he is surrounded by something that he sees not and is generally unaware of.
