Normally, yes. But what benefit does "shooting the messenger" (which it clearly is, at least in this case) have for the general (flying) public ?
Obviously, he found a hole in the system that no-one else saw or was willing to close - and he took a big risk to proof its existence.

Ultimately, flight-security is also a responsibilty of the passengers, because up-there, nobody else can help you.

If he gets sentenced, the message to the general public is (though not intended): see no evil, hear no evil, tell no evil.

Because, if things go bad, you're the one that gets blamed, if there's no-one else to blame.
