I think that the US fundamentally gets "democracy" wrong.

Its not important that you get the result quickly and cheaply. I important that you get the result openly and correctly.
You have the a really simple (I would argue undemocratic but that another argument) first past the post system. It would not be impossible to fill in the ballot by hand and count by hand. That way if there was a close election you could recount slowly and carefully, like we do here in Australia and most places around the world.

Its slow, its not sexy, its not cheap but its ultimately accurate.

Remember folk democracy is not George W or John Howard on the TV or some local party official giving you a how to vote card. Democracy is what you do in the polling both and how is counted. If that is to expensive to do right then democracy is lost.

And besides counting proportional representation on paper is fun.
