Busting the Worm Writers
Tim Mullen, 2003-11-24

Microsoft deserves praise for offering a cash reward to catch people who criminally exploit their bugs.

"I wonder if in a few years, when people wake up with a Microsoft OS that DOESN'T get hit by viruses..."

Good question. I honestly hope that happens some day. (assuming they don't muck it up with DRM and enough bloat to make the by-then Pentium 8's scream in overloaded agony ;) )

Okay, okay... just kidding about the last part (sorta.) But the first part is quite serious. I would really appreciate a network that had the same level of security that my (insert *ix-like OS here) servers and workstations have, perhaps higher.

Windows 2003 does go an admirable way towards that goal. It does have quite a bit further to go, and it needs to become lighter and faster while it's at it (esp. compared to Samba 3), but otherwise it is good to see that Microsoft is at least working on some sense of security.

OTOH, the only way that will happen is if Microsoft can sit down and take a hard, honest look at their codebase. I hope that's what they're doing with their Longhorn Project, but only time will tell, ne?

/P
