The GPL, by defination prevents this problem from ever happening. If more than 5 people are using a piece of gpl software, no matter how old it is, someone will release a free patch for it. People have become way to dependant on prepackaged binaries from distros. They act like if their distro doesn't support them anymore their automatically a damsel in distress. Red Hat users can be fine for many many years to come, because all they have to do is keep downloading those tarballs and updating themselves. If distro X ever tried to charge me for a security fix on gpl software, I wouldn't think twice about opening the source up in vi and start on my own patch. Not enough people program anymore and automatically turn into retards the second they can't use their rpm's. BTW, I don't see how an OSX rumor relates _at all_ to software that has completely different licenses from OSX. I think more than anything this is a shot at Open Source Software trying to give it an image of a disorganized community full of opportunists whom prey on other's weaknesses.
