I'd suspect the primary reason the proprietary vendors tend to supply the errata free is because they don't like the alternative. Hint: it wouldn't be collecting fees. Try wrapping your puny mind around the thought of FTC mandated product recalls.

Software is the ONLY major US industry which to date has been imune to the helping hands of big government and greedy trail lawyers and everyone in the industry from Bill Gates to RMS likes it that way and have zero intention of handing Congress a gold plated invitation to start holding hearings.
