Examples of good and bad practice can be drawn from this incident, and I for one do think that Wells Fargo's attempts to mitigate the affects of their contractor's ommissions are laudable. On the other hand we should told what they are doing to prevent such incidents happening again too.
As for other companies those who have 'gotten away with it' or those who are taking risks with customer data thinking 'it'll never happen to us' : wake up take note look at the costs, do a real risk benefit analyis. The worked examples are out there, CCRA; Guest; Victoria Secrets; and now Wells Fargo.
