Companies should protect consumer data better than Wells Fargo did, but in cleaning up its laptop data spill the bank blazed a trail worth following.

As one of the people possibly compromised by the incident, I can tell you that although Wells started right, their efforts were only half-hearted. The Credit protection service was for ONE YEAR only, although my credit, ssn, etc has been compromised for life. Wells didnt seem to remember that it was not only this one person who now had my data, it was every person they wanted to sell it to from Nigera to Indonesia. They also were pretty firm on "this is what we are doing and shame on you for even asking questions" in my conversations. Now, I understand I am only a small fish in a large pond, but this is exactly the kind of attitude that has made me choose to switch banks. Maybe one is no better than another, but the attitude they took with me was one that made me change banks.
