As to the idea that one can run an old 486 as a router with Linux is a good use of old hardware and I do similar tricks. But, as a former IBM MVS Systems Programmer, I do have knowledge above the casual home user. The key is my BS, MS, and PhD[can] and CISSP training. Unfotunately, the Linux crowd forgets that they too generally have a similar level of training and experience.
I keeping with the spirit of the article, what we need a strategy to help home users and small business networks at-risk. Maybe the Dept of Homeland Security can offer grants to offer such services free of charge.
