Tim Mullen, 2004-02-02

Microsoft can end the scourge of e-mail viruses by ending its support for old software, and the clueless users who refuse to upgrade.

I'm with Unca on this one. I'm sorry Tim that you're not able to secure a Windows 98 machine as it's incredibly easy to do (from external threats). I've 100 PC Win98 network here with no virus infection since Nimda (which was my wake up call). A few simple steps, like not using MS email clients (now those really are the clueless ones, using Outlook), and avoiding MS on anything Internet facing. Actually I tell a lie, I have a Win98 machine acting as a low volume net server. Now let's see, once you turn off file sharing in 98 how many open ports do we have, erm none. Now let's count them on 2k / XP shall we?

While we're at it anyone like to recall which OSs fuelled Blaster?

Running 98 as a client machine is not the choice of security clueless, that accolade goes to those who rush lemming like over every upgrade cliff Bill and Steve present to them. You want to be MS's alpha testers, fine go ahead but just don't blame those of us who trust mature products. Of course Tim you no doubt know for sure that none of those dear users who opened mydoom were using XP were they?

Despite appearances I'm not complacent about the security of my network. I just don't fall for the guff that says upgrading to XP /2k3 is going to improve it.
