The state of art of some of these things, and their interfaces and documentation ... just not for the beginner.
Get people on Anti-Virus, installed right (use some outfit like http://www.grc.com/default.htm Shields Up to verify it is installed correctly) and regularly update virus definitions properly;
and get them on a few other protections like a Firewall and UPS ... the biggest threat is not from the thousands of virus writers, but the millions of their victims who are spreading this stuff by ignorance ... perhaps they are equal threats.
