Stop Being a Victim
Tim Mullen, 2004-04-27

An influential newspaper columnist blames "contemptuous techies" for allowing users to fall prey to viruses and spyware. But don't some users deserve a little contempt?

contemptuoustechie
I've lost count of how many times I've had users and their bosses tell me that all they want to know is what they need to know in order to do their jobs. Try getting your company to make computer training mandatory, or even offer it at all. It's no wonder most users are clueless about security. Our corporate culture reinforces the notion that unless you are a 'techie' you don't need to know anything about the technology you are using. The technology is supposed to save you from your own stupidity.

I have some words for the Mossbergs of the world: Instead of spending your day surfing porn sites and opening infected emails to get a look at "Britney Spears nude" or some such, take a few minutes to LEARN something about the technology you use. A milkman's job is to deliver milk, but he/she still has to know how to drive a truck. Duhhh, sometimes you need to know how to use the tools that enable you to do your job.

End-of rant...
