There is however a strong business dependency on virus writers continuously releasing new code for which end-users positively must have the companies latest upgrade.
So it could be argued that anti-virus companies have little to no incentive to offer products that would pro-actively block potential new viruses, instead favoring the ever-updating signature file approach which helps secure a steady revenue stream.
This is the paradox of companies that claim to work at stopping a problem, yet would go bankrupt if it ever did stop it.
You can look at such a company as either a fool or a liar.
