The Trouble with Gmail
Mark Rasch, 2004-06-14

Mass acceptance of the keyword scanning in Google's new e-mail service could leave government spooks feeling lucky.

That's the problem I have with this service. It's one thing to be up front and tell your subscribers their e-mail will be monitored, it's another to do that to unknowing senders who don't subscribe and have never agreed to the policy. If you think Google will keep this information to itself, and that nobody but the machines will use those data for a myriad of purposes, I have something to sell you too. This is only a hint of what's to come, and I for one want to hold onto as much of my privacy as I can. There's lots of talk about how what GMail is doing is already done all over the Internet, but if my mail is encrypted and sent from my own server, how can it be parsed and how is that not more secure and private than what GMail is doing?
