"Spyware" isn't harmless software when it starts hijacking your browser, downloading updates, and displaying adult porn images to small children.

I would highly recommend using an alternative browser. At the moment I'm putting FoxFire through the fires and am happy with the results. The main point isn't necessarily that it runs better, but more that it's not the focus of spyware/adware attacks. Its the same reason that others would rather use Linux over Windows. Its not necessarily more secure, but its not as popular. So, if your going to create a virus and you want it to spread you'll want it to spread on the most commonly used OS.
