Few facts about SP2 anti-piracy. Like you said it will work when you install the SP2, however the Windows Update service won't work since v5 checks product key. So it's possible to install SP2 but not to use Windows Update.

Other thing is that Windows 2000 is 4 years old! and that's a long time in computer world. Even Microsoft had diffuculties with SP2 making, they had to put ice most of Longhorn development, so how long would it take to make new update for Windows 2000. Answer: Too long. It would help most of windows users just small minority.

Microsoft doesn't have obligation to users who steal from it! Cut out that Robin Hood crap, if you want free system go with Linux.
