Limited warrantees are a balance between manufacturing defects (which tend to reveal themselves quickly) and failure as a result of normal wear and tear. A limited warranty which let an auto manufacturer get away with using cardboard steering column would be considered a rip off.
It is a good thing Microsoft is more responsible than that, they recognize their product has serious defects and do "recalls" to fix the problems. In fact, they even do recalls on old models. Unfortunately, they are not able to get everything fixed before the new model is released and each new release itself needs a series of recalls.
Now the manufacturer appears to be saying, `we can not get these old models to work properly and are giving up even trying, but the next recall of the most recent model will fix things'.

Looks like a string of lemons to me.
