An external reference to the Internet should not be limited to an image or a webbug, it should be any data that's stored remotely. If the text of the message is in on a remote file do be downloaded in a frame when you open the message, just too bad, you won't see it.
It's a good way of saying : "if you want me to read your message, don't spy on me".
My personal software firewall at home is configured in such a way that the e-mail client program is allowed to connect to the Internet only on port tcp/110 (POP).
