Step away from all the vendor hype. The one device that will always be the best tool for information security is a competent security professional.

That's great, training and knowledge is terrific.

BUT, many open source tools require more user knowledge than many admins have, and they often pale in comparison to shrink wrap.

NOT always, of course, but many times they do. Try patching your systems in an enterprise with 30,000 users in a Windows without a vendor like Patchlink, using 'open-source' tools...

There's a lot of vendor hype but there are also lots of good vendors that help leverage admin time and efforts to keep the network 'managed' correctly and efficiently.

I support open source but am not a religious fanatic about it: If the shrinkwrap tool works better and doesn't cost an arm and a leg over the lifetime of the product's use, then it goes into my network and that of my customers' networks.

Keep the vendors in check but use the good tools, they're sometimes actually worth the money...
