Infected In Twenty Minutes
Scott Granneman, 2004-08-19

What normally happens within twenty minutes? That's how long your average unprotected PC running Windows XP, fresh out of the box, will last once it's connected to the Internet.

Ummm...a short comment on your approach...

If the "friends and family" to which you refer aren't already doing the things you suggest, there is a reasonable possibility that they already have the very problems you wish to prevent. Same holds for those who are running XP.

Perhaps a better approach would be recommending that they first take their systems to someone qualified to determine what, if any, malware is present, removing same (through appropriate means for the particular system) and then making any necessary configuration changes or software additions and teaching those same folks safe practices.
