Worms and viruses that pollute the Internet aren't new. What's new is the incredible magnitude of the problem and how it's growing.

Deal with it, meaning, put up with it.
"...he state of the Internet today: more polluted than ever, and getting worse."
"I am finding it increasingly difficult to explain to laypeople about security on the Internet."
Deal with it. In other words, to use you own bearing towards running windows - don't try to do anything about the problem - just put up with it.
Or, you could try to do something about the problem, and place blame where it belongs - the manufacturer of an OS with more security features than its 'competitors', who refuses to use those security features in an intelligent manner.
To adopt an analogy, if someone is hurt in a car accident, you can blame the driver(s) at fault - but - if the seat belts were clearly also faulty, the maker carries blame as well. However, Microsoft manages to redirect blame onto 'evil hackors' entirely, and avoids any responsibility.
You're a journalist - don't let them off the hook.
So, don't complain about how hard it is to help people deal in internet security, as long as you let Microsoft off the hook. Just put up with it.
