A Polluted Internet
Kelly Martin, 2004-08-26

Worms and viruses that pollute the Internet aren't new. What's new is the incredible magnitude of the problem and how it's growing.

"People shouldn't have to be computer experts to own a computer" 2004-08-30

YES THEY SHOULD! OK, so now we've stated both the untenable positions, let's look at the reasonable middle position: people are happy to use computers without having the slightest idea what they are doing, yet we demand certifications for tons of other activities: driving a car, installing electrical wires, flying an airplane... Oh, you can't die by using a computer? Nope, but you can go broke, which is pretty bad, and you can cause tons of problems for other people, which is also bad. It's bleeding dangerous out there, and people going online without taking the time to find out what it's all about deserve what they get. There are so many off-line sources of information available that going online unprepared is simply not excusable. My 60-year old dad took the time to find out what was what. When I told him about firewalls etc. he said "Of course!" and installed firewall, adware buster etc. in a jiffy. He's a retired schoolteacher, no great computer light, but he did it by taking the time to learn. So could a lot of the users out there, if only they had an incentive to do it. But they don't, we save their asses time and again so they can continue to have unsafe surf. Harsh? Yes, I have little patience for whiners.
