A Polluted Internet
Kelly Martin, 2004-08-26

Worms and viruses that pollute the Internet aren't new. What's new is the incredible magnitude of the problem and how it's growing.

Actually, all Joe Public needs to do is learn a tiny little bit. They should be expected to (and held accountable for failing to) learn some simple safety rules.

A computer science degree or operator's license shouldn't be necessary. It isn't necessary to provide physical restraints so that Joe Public doesn't do other stupid things like put a metal fork in the microwave. When Joe does that, Joe is a dumbass, and should be treated accordingly. When Joe decides to drive down the toll highway without wearing a seatbelt, turning on his lights at night, or perhaps driving with his feet while sticking his head out of the window, it is hardly Ford's fault when something awful happens ;)

We are heading down a dangerous path with society's overprotective stance towards people making bad decisions. We're going to evolve our way to a species of drooling helmet-wearing imbeciles encased in a hamster globe at this rate... but at least we'll be safe.
