A Polluted Internet
Kelly Martin, 2004-08-26

Worms and viruses that pollute the Internet aren't new. What's new is the incredible magnitude of the problem and how it's growing.

In an ideal world, we would all have oodles of time to read all that wonderful stuff and get up to speed. Further, we would all have brains that deal well with technical and mechanical stuff. But not all people do have the time, let alone the ability. How about the master artist painter who fetches $10,000 for one painting? You don't think they have genius. But, this same person may be all thumbs when it comes to understanding computers. I get tired of hearing computer techies put others down for "whining," for not having an inherant ability to comprehend computers. Not all 60 year old dads have a son or daughter who's a computer techie. (I help my folks out too, and yes they too saw the wisdom of AV and firewall software, once they understood some basics.) It is just not a simple as is portrayed. The mix of potential users and folks online is so vast, so large, that it is an unrealistic expectation that they all find out what is what on the Internet. Then, consider all the folks who are functionally illiterate. They may be able to buy a computer, set it up, turn it on, and jump online. But, they do not have the skills required to read, let alone digest, even a book like computers for dummies 101. It is just grateing to hear techies preach that everyone going online without taking the time to find out what it's all about deserve what they get. The arrogance of such a statement is quite offensive. You my friend deserve what you get when you get married, and then divorced because you don't do well with social relationships. Harsh. I too have little patience, for arrogance from atop the ivory tower. Come down off the tower, it is dirty and dangerous down here in the trenches. But, life is in the trenches, not on the tower.
