Feast of Egos
Tim Mullen, 2004-09-07

Eager to tarnish Microsoft's shiny new Service Pack 2, the security press managed to spin the most thin and marginal issues into "gaping holes" and "security craters."

SP2 is a step in the right direction. It isn't perfect and no software patch ever will be. The real issue is badly written software. And trust me.. I work for a company that integrates badly written software and it was a VERY frustrating 3 weeks to get that stuff to work on an SP2 box. But, we expended the effort because we believe in the long haul SP2 will save more money than it cost in figureing out how to work with it. Not to mention eventually PC's will start being sold with it. The cat is out of the bag people deal with it. I for one hope that MS takes longhorn and really does it right. The problem is if they do you can bet people will jump ship. The entire point of MS products is that they are easy. Easy is NOT secure. Nor is compatable secure. MS is insecure by design and always has been and you can bet as soon as they make it secure it won't be so easy and someone else will start taking market share. Or, MS will get it right and make things easy and secure all at once and now all the AV vendors and security companies will sue because the "evil monopolistic microsoft" drove them out of business. Face it there's too much money involved in this for anything to make any sence. There is the real reason for your hype, and the news coverage.
