I am part of a fairly large university. The way we do our stuff. Every time someone tries to get into the network, wireless or wired, the computer is scanned with Nessus to check if it is vulnerable. If the scan passes, it is let through. If not, we simply pop up a message asking the user to call the help desk.
We have had faculty rant and rave but the part about the security hype is that everyone is aware of it. Students come in saying "I have my homework due in an hour" and we generally give them a ticket number. They submit the ticket number to the faculty along with a late assignment. Haven't heard of any faculty saying "that's not my problem"
