Now, on to the comment:
I think the descriptions of the students/faculty regarding their machines is pretty accurate of all users. They don't know and don't care.
Even the CS professors are a little ignorant of computer security. This is illustrated by me having to explain the "Filtered" result of a port scan to one of my instructors.
In reading the article, I gathered that the installation of antivirus was a requirement... Why not include a SUS server to the network and make the configuration of the machine to point to that SUS server a requirement, too? It would eliminate the need to worry about whether or not the machines are getting patched.
