Open Source Versus Closed Source Security

In the age old battle between open source and closed source operating systems and applications, can either of them really be considered more secure than the other?

The one area where open source does shine above is resolution of discovered vulnerabilities.

Anyone who has watched any of the major vuln lists for any length of time has seen a vulnerability get announced, verified, examined and patched in less than 24 hours. Has anyone ever seen that happen with closed source software?

Of course, the same point being made in this article could be made here. The speed with which issues are resolved are not due to the nature of open source software but to the hard work of the people involved in the particular projects.

So, can we relate the dedication part to the nature of open source software or is the nature of closed source not to be held responsible for anything?
