Jason Miller, 2004-09-30

In the age old battle between open source and closed source operating systems and applications, can either of them really be considered more secure than the other?

I beleive that Open and closed source software both have their place. I just hate seeing the bloggers spew blatant propaganda about open source when the facts are easily found online.

On March 19th, 2004 a review of vulnerabilities was done by Forrester Research which shows security comparisons of Various Linux Vendors vs Windows. It is a good read and shows "days of risk" or the time between when a vulnerability was discovered and when a patch was released and the % of severe flaws. It is 8 months old but Open Source software still has vulnerbilities coming out the wazoo.

I suggest everyone read it to get a balanced view of security. And by the way.. For all you consiracy theorists, Just because it is posted on Microsoft's site does not mean it was rigged.

The one thing that makes Windows "Less Secure" according to Linux security ratings on various Linux zealot sites, is the fact that it is the target of choice since 90% of computers are running windows.
