They made mistakes, EVERYONE will make a mistake at some point in time, several probably. I think the point of the article is that you want to better prepare yourself for these mistakes. Think about it, thats a pretty broad goal, to prepare.
You can't protect against everything, but you should do what is reasonable, and I say that they did not do what is reasonable, plain and simple. It has nothing to do with "deserving" etc. The fact is, we don't have all the 'facts' of this scenario. Were they scamming? Were they negligent? Did they lose their IT capability? Were they just overwhelmed and never 'got around to it'? We don't know.
What is up with all of these acrid attitudes these days? No one has a sense of community anymore. They DESERVE to be hacked, they had the instrusion COMING TO THEM, etc., its almost as though some revel in the misfortune of others, and that is sad.
