Bill Gates is right about one thing: asking people to use a two-factor form of authentication would go a long way toward alleviating a lot of the password problems that plague computer security today.

Eww.
Smart-cards aren't a terrible idea; but obviously they only need to be used when it's appropriate.
For example, I wouldn't want to use a smart-card just to post a message to my favourite message board.
My bank, however, should allow the option of supplying them.
(they already do it for commercial customers).
