Some of the largest anti-virus companies have virtually ignored the spyware problem because there is no profit incentive for them to do otherwise. Meanwhile, spyware companies make millions.

It's quite simple, too many spywhere removal/detection tools install they're own spywhere once done so you always end up with a 'new' problem. Maybe if some like CERT would initiate 1 single tool properly tested and validated... 2) spywhere removal is not as clear cut as worms or viruses and mostly leave the pc behind in some form of mungled state. 3) using another browser helps but it does not solve the problem, eventually there will be more then 1 exploit at the same time where the 'new' browsers users will suffer under. One clear cut solution is to create a user with barely zero rights, with the read and execute rights removed of all the basic programs and barely no rights at all on any diskdrive, this can already be done with w2k and xp home and pro versions and with any processor, then by using the runas service you can run whatever browser and yes spywhere and worms will get every chance to target your system but they won't get anywhere and they won't be able to do anything while you the user can do whatever you like. Since the day I have implemented this methode I am free of they're nuicense for a very simple reason, I've taken they're rights away. And you can do it to!
