Profitware
Kelly Martin, 2004-11-26

Some of the largest anti-virus companies have virtually ignored the spyware problem because there is no profit incentive for them to do otherwise. Meanwhile, spyware companies make millions.

Good article, but I don;t agree 2004-11-30

2 main points that I don't agree with..

Vendors are sitting on the fence because larger accounts refuse to pay more. Not entirely so. Spyware/malware detection, prevention and removal requires a different type of expertise to virus/spam and doing it well takes time to get right. Smaller, nimbler startups have beaten the behemoths out of the starting gate. The smart money will buy, not build. Witness that CA just aquired Pest Patrol.

Secondly. It's true that the most recommended tools are the free ones. They are no longer the best, not even close. Recent tests showed that Giant Companies Antispyware is the most effective, followed by Webroot's Spysweeper. Both of these are not free. Spybot and Adware are just so-so and falling behind.
