Scott Granneman, 2004-12-13

Online extortion is quietly affecting thousands of businesses, for a very simple reason: it works. The big question then becomes, how will you and your company decide to respond?

What about the source of the problem? 2004-12-16

Take a step back and look at how these attacks are perpetrated. Many DDOS attacks use unpatched routers and completely fixable exploits.

And yet the large Internet backbone companies that have this exploitable equipment maintain that it is not "cost effective" to patch themselves.

And good luck getting their cooperation to trace the origin of these attacks.

It's like leaving confidential information on your network at everyone full access because it would cost money to have someone set security and auditing to it, then shrugging your shoulders if the information is exploited.

Really the questions should be - when will these companies be forced to take responsibility to the havoc that their ambivalence is causing? Obviously expecting them to do it because it is the right thing to do isn't working.
