Because it will give Solaris more exposure to the masses who are eating up Linux and *BSD. I learned Solaris in school, but once I left I had no way of keeping the knowledge because I didnt want to blow my money on a SPARC system with Solaris when I can throw together a PC and install a "free" OS. Open source is great for the software market because it humbles those software/hardware companies that made you pay through the nose for anything related to their product. Im glad to see Sun forced to Open Source their OS....not that Im interested in picking it up again. I just like to see them compete. They're hoping that people will use their "free" software and learn it and then pay for their enterprise support/software/hardware when they're ready.
